This Company was organized at Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, on the 20th day of September, 1861; arrived at Camp Butler October 18th; was attached to the 5th Regiment of Illinois Cavalry, Volunteers, October 11; was mustered into the United States service December 8, 1861; started from Camp Butler, for St. Louis, February 20, 1862; arrived a Benton Barracks, Mo., February 27; left Benton Barracks March 5, arrived at Pilot Knob the following day; left Pilot Knob March 13, and arrived at Greenville, Mo., March 19; left Greenville March 29; halted at Reeves’ Station, on Black River, one day and arrived at Doniphan, Mo., April 1st. Had a slight skirmish with a Company of Guerrillas, under the command of Tim Reeves; made several prisoners and captured a large portion of his camp equipage. Left Doniphan April 17, arrived at Pocahontas, Arkansas, April 21; remained in Pocahontas, on duty as Provost Guard, until June 27, at which date we left to join Gen. Curtis’ Division, at Jacksonport, Arkansas; arrived at Jacksonport June 30; left Jacksonport July 1st.; arrived at Augusta, on White River, on the evening of the 3d; remained at this place one day, and celebrated the anniversary of our National Independence in

an appropriate manner. Left Augusta on the 5th, passed through Cotton Plant on the evening of the 7th; here a portion of our Division had quite a serious engagement with a large rebel force, but succeeded in routing them with considerable slaughter. Arrived at Clarendon on the evening of the 9th; left Clarendon on the 11th and arrived at Helena, on the Mississippi river, on the morning of the 12th, where we remained employed in scouting, from time to time, until Nov. 27, when we went into Mississippi, under the command of Gen. Washburn, for the purpose of destroying railroad communications, in which we succeeded; returned to Helena December 7th; remained there till January 9, 1862, when we started on an expedition to White river. Arrived at Clarendon on the 13th, returned to Helena on the 19th, where we remained scouting and doing picket duty until May 6. Started out under command of Col. Clayton, of the 5th Kansas Cavalry, in order to ascertain the whereabouts of Col. Dobbins, (rebel) who was reported to be in the neighborhood of Cotton Plant, with a force of about one thousand men. This was our last scout and proved entirely successful, as we destroyed a large amount of forage and commissary stores, which had been gathered to this point for the use of the rebels.
